I have looked through Martha Stewart's Homekeeping Handbook and Home Comforts and have not been able to find an answer to my laundry question... maybe ya'll can help.
I'm not positive it always works, but leaving it laid out on the grass in the sun for a bit can get rid of some of the smell. If you can't wash it, try running it through the dryer on the air fluff cycle for a bit.
Try washing the fabric, and then adding 1/2 Cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Vinegar tends to neutralize odors. Don't worry if you've never done this...your laundry won't smell like a salad when you're done, LOL!
Those are all great suggestions thanks! The laundry in question are my towels and I generally hangthem outside to dry so they get sunlight. I'm going to try the vinegar next. I'll keep you posted.

That old smell is difficult to get out.

I was going to say the same: sunlight and wash with vinegar. Both get dd's cloth diapers clean smelling.
You can also bag it with some lavender or baking soda for a few days.

thanks again!
vinegar--gets out "basement" "cat" "eeeewwwwwwwww" and other well-known odors at our house! Sun helps, too
Baking soda in the rinse water might help, too.
Purex laundry soap also has a version with Odor Neutralizer, if the vinegar doesn't work. Use hot water, drying in the sun should help.
